Edgardo Yambao, the brother-in-law of former military comptroller Lt. Gen. Jacinto Ligot, was grilled during a Senate hearing on Thursday because of the supposed P255-million deposits to his bank accounts from 2001 to 2005. Sen. Franklin Drilon said records of the Anti-Money Laundering Council show that peso and dollar deposits were allegedly made to Yambao's accounts.


President Benigno Aquino III has yet to decide on what position will be given to formerstate auditor and whistle-blower Heidi Mendoza.


The wife of former military comptroller Lt. Gen. Jacinto Ligot once sold a house in the United States to herself.

This was revealed Thursday during the resumption of the Senate blue ribbon committee hearing on the alleged corruption in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Even before the senators could question her, the wife of former military comptroller Lt. Gen. Jacinto Ligot broke down and was escorted out of the Senate inquiry on Thursday.


The Philippine military on Wednesday sent an aircraft to the disputed Reed Bank near Palawan after receiving a report that Chinese patrollers were trying to harass some Filipino oil explorers in the area.

The Chinese were allegedly claiming that the oil explorers from the Department of Energy were inside Chinese territory, according 



Calling the Bureau of Immigration (BI) “irresponsible" for deporting 14 Taiwanese nationals to mainland China, former President Fidel V. Ramos on Thursday blamed the agency for the dent in the relations between the Philippines and Taiwan.

Rabusa to file plunder raps on 20 people


Former military budget officer Lt. Col. George Rabusa on Monday said he is set to file plunder against almost 20 individuals, including two former Armed Forces chiefs of staff and two former military comptrollers.
Speaking to reporters at the launch of the "Mabuting Pilipino" anti-corruption campaign of civil societies, Rabusa said he will file his detailed complaint-affidavit before the Department of Justice on Wednesday.

House halts Singson salary


MANILA, Philippines - The payment of the salary and other emoluments to Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson has been suspended starting today even as the House awaits the resignation of the congressman now doing time in a foreign prison.

Gutierrez will be impeached

Neri Colmenares is optimistic that more than 94 congressmen will vote in favor of the impeachment complaint filed against Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez.They added more cases in the second complaint, which includes the police “euro-generals,” the fertilizer fund scam, and the Mega Pacific automated election deal."No Ombudsman can stay in office after such record of deliberate inaction," Colmenares said.

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago dismissed as "alarmist talk" proposals to give President Aquino emergency powers amid fears of an oil crisis because of the wave of unrest in Arab countries, including Libya.   Santiago, a former chair of the Senate's foreign relations committee, said that the Philippines does not import crude from Libya in the first place.   "We get our oil mainly from Saudi Arabia, so where's the emergency?" she told reporters on Monday.

PERSEID METEOR SHOWER



KOLKATA: The Perseid meteor shower is expected on Thursday night, when the earth passes through the debris of comet Swift Tuttle, with predictions of a shooting star every second at the peak of the celestial spectacle.
It is predicted that the earth will pass through the comet debris between August 11 and 13. As hundreds and thousands of small rocky fragments enter the Earth's atmosphere, they will burn up due to friction displaying brilliant and dazzling streaks of light, said D.P. Duari, Director, Research and Academics at the Birla Planetarium.
